columbia international affairs online (CIAO) is the world’s most comprehensive electronic database for theory and research in international affairs. It publishes a wide range of scholarship, from 1991 onward, that includes working papers, occasional papers, policy briefs, conferences proceedings, e-books, and journals.
Navigation Bar
Our navigation bar organizes material by category. This is especially helpful for individuals who would like to browse an institution’s conference proceedings, a favorite journal, or books by a specific publisher.
WORKING PAPERS
Works in progress, papers to be submitted for publication in, or chapters intended for publication.
JOURNALS
A collection of journal articles and abstracts in the field of International Affairs. Most journals are full text; partial text journals are denoted by an asterisk (*).
BOOKS
Collection of books listed by publisher. To browse by author, subject, or title, refer to Site Index.
POLICY BRIEFS
Short, topical essays and position papers.
CASE STUDIES
Original papers written exclusively for CIAO by leading scholars that examine the effects of important events in history, such as the Cuban Missile Crisis, and recurring topics like weapons of mass destruction and global warming. With extensive bibliographies, multi-media, key treaties, and speeches, the CIAO case study is an ideal international affairs subject guide, which easily launches and promotes extensive class discussion.
Searching
Basic and Advanced options will return relevant results from entered criteria. Use the basic search at first if you consider yourself a novice in using online resources. Otherwise, the advance search will permit more variables in your query. Basic Search Hints: CIAO’s search engine allows you to search for documents by entering keywords and/or phrases. For example, searching for “disarmament” will return pages containing “disarmament.” Search for nuclear disarmament will return documents with both the word “nuclear” and “disarmament.” CIAO also supports wildcard searching (*) for single terms, thus disarm* will return: “disarm,” “disarmament,”“disarmaments,” “disarmed,” “disarming,” etc.
Wildcard searching is not available for phrases, such as: foreign diplom*.
COURSE PACKS
Ready-made selections of CIAO materials—journal articles, book chapters, working papers, and policy briefs—for learning about international affairs, chosen to provide students with opposing views and provocative arguments on a given topic. Each pack includes a sidebar of links to other outside sources, maps, and primary materials
MAPS/COUNTRY DATA
An interactive global map collection, featuring data and country comparison options.
MISCELLANEOUS NOTES
The Working Papers, Journals, Books, and Policy Briefs are selected in consultation with CIAO’s advisory board. [Archive] indicates that institution no longer contributes new material to CIAO.
CIAO also supports “?” string. “O?EC” will return documents containing: “OPEC” and “OEEC.”
SITE INDEX
Browse Working Papers, Journals, Books, Policy Briefs, and All of CIAO by author, title, and subject. Click on the content area for the list under the preferred index and then click on the hyperlinked article/book/paper.
Basic Search Instructions
Follow three easy steps to conduct a basic search. 1: From the homepage, limit either to the following content collection(s) by selecting its corresponding box, or select none to search all of CIAO. 2: Specify which subject and date from the drop-down menus, or none to search all subjects and all dates. 3: Enter search criteria in open field and click search. For this example, the user is interested in the recent conflict in Sudan from the most recent resources, which are Working Papers and Policy Briefs. Select Working Papers and Policy Briefs, specifying the Current Year, and enter Sudan as the search term before clicking search. Search results will: • Show the title of the document, two lines of text, the URL, and the file size. • If available, will also display date of publication, contributing institution, and author(s). • Show results for the first 500 documents sorted by relevance in descending order.
Advanced Searching Tips
Advance Searching allows choosing a region, as well as entering three separate Boolean search terms. Within each Boolean search string, each term can be weighted either as: • Should contain search term • Must contain search term • Must Not contain search term Next, the search terms can be narrowed to: • • • • in the body in the title in the author’s name in the institution’s name
Finally, the user can distinguish the search terms as the words or the phrase. Returning to the initial results from our earlier search, if the user enters the second Boolean search string that it must contain in the body the phrase armed conflict, then selects the region Africa, it will return two very relevant results.
Advanced Searching can return more relevant (and fewer) results, improving the overall CIAO experience.
Return Results Page: The search returned approximately 170 results (possibly more results as more content is being continually added). To view the article text, click on its title. You may also search for similar articles by selecting Find Similar. Notice that it automatically launches into the advanced search page. Not all 170 results may be relevant to the search. Advanced searching will yield more relevant results.
