[00:02.83]V FOR VENDETTA
[00:06.56]
[00:10.42]
[00:13.43 ]Good evening London,
[00:15.65]Allow me first to apologize.
[00:18.79]I do, like many of you,
[00:20.08]appreciate the comforts of the everyday routine,
[00:22.99]the security of the familiar,
[00:24.74]the tranquility of repetition.
[00:28.10]I enjoy them as much as any bloke.
[00:30.54]But in the spirit of commemoration,
[00:32.45]whereby important events of the past
[00:34.87]usually associated with someone’s death or the end of some awful,
[00:38.19]bloody struggle are celebrated with a nice holiday.
[00:41.95]I thought we could mark this November the 5th a day that is,
[00:45.53]sadly no longer remembered
[00:47.56]by taking some time out of our daily lives to sit down and have a little chat.
[00:52.43]There are, of course, those who do not want us to speak.
[00:56.03]I suspect even now,
[00:57.47]orders are being shouted into telephones
[00:59.52]and men with guns will soon be on their way.
[01:02.98]Why? Because while the truncheon may be used in lieu of conversation,
[01:08.62]words will always retain their power.
[01:11.66]Words offer the means to meaning and,
[01:13.72]for those who will listen,
[01:15.25]the enunciation of truth.
[01:17.36]And the truth is,
[01:18.91]there is something terribly wrong with this country, isn’t it there?
[01:23.40]
[01:25.99]Cruelty and injustice,
[01:28.10]intolerance and oppression,
[01:29.89]and where once you had the freedom to object
[01:31.78]to think and speak as you saw fit,
[01:33.99]you now have censors and system of surveillance
[01:36.72]coercing your conformity and soliciting submission.
[01:40.74]How did this happen?
[01:41.84]Who’s to blame?
[01:44.14]Certainly there are those who are more responsible than others.
[01:47.02]And they will be held accountable.
[01:48.93]But again, truth be told,
[01:50.72]if you’re looking for the guilty
[01:52.49]you need only look into a mirror.
[01:55.53]I know why you did it.
[01:57.45]I know you were afraid.
[01:59.08]Who wouldn’t be?
[02:00.28]War, terror, disease.
[02:02.83]There were a myriad of problems which conspired to corrupt your reason
[02:06.99]and rob you of your common sense.
[02:09.39]Fear got the best of you.
[02:11.19]And in your panic,
[02:12.06]you turned to the now High Chancellor Adam Sutler.
[02:15.66]He promised you order,
[02:16.85]he promised you peace
[02:18.24]and all he demanded in return was your silent, obedient consent.
[02:22.28]
[02:23.52]Last night, I sought to end that silence.
[02:26.06]Last night, I destroyed the Old Bailey to remind this country of what it has forgotten.
[02:31.89]More than 400 years ago,
[02:34.67]a great citizen wished to imbed the 5th of November forever in our memory.
[02:39.37]His hope was to remind the world that fairness,
[02:41.84]justice and freedom are more than words.
[02:45.19]They are perspectives.
[02:47.14]So if you’ve seen nothing,
[02:49.23]if the crimes of this government remain unknown to you,
[02:52.73]then I would suggest that you allow the 5th of November to pass unmarked.
[02:57.57]But if you see what I see,
[03:00.29]if you feel as I feel,
[03:02.90]and if you would seek as I seek,
[03:05.39]then I ask you to stand beside me,
[03:07.49]one year from tonight,
[03:08.65]outside the gates of Parliament.
[03:10.66]And together,
[03:11.87]we shall give them a 5th of November
[03:13.61]that shall never ever be forgot.
