"Installing Windows 7 beta on an HP Mini 1000 etbook
The guide is split into 3 parts, an overview and a detailed step-by-step tutorial, and what works and what doesn't. Disclaimer: I have no responsibility for any action you take as a result of reading this post. Please also read the Windows 7 FAQ I created CAREFULLY before proceeding. link1 Part 1: An Overview of Your Options---------------------Get the OS... ...officially here (direct download)... ...unofficially from a direct ftp download site... ...or through bittorrent. YOU WILL EED A KEY. Instructions on how to get one are here When downloaded, the ISO image should be around ~2.4GB. If you downloaded anything that is less than that, its possibly the activation crack or malware tempting you to run it. Always use an anti-virus scanner! Installation options include... ...from a DVD... ...an external Hard Drive... ...or a USB stick... The last two options require either extracting the files with an ISO extractor, or mounting the files with DaemonTools. If it's too complicated, break out the external USB DVD burner, burn and boot. Depending on your hard drive capacity, you can either... ...upgrade from Vista... ...or do a clean install from XP. You'll need at least the 16GB SSD to upgrade since the hard drive ends up with around 4-6 GB of free space left after the install.
----------------------Part 2: A Step by Step Guide----------------------
Step 1: Back Up Your Files and Free HD Space Note: If you have a 60GB version, skip this step, and if you want to keep XP, partition your HD

with a program like EASEUS Partition Manager. For everyone else, they will need to sacrifice their XP in front of the image of a sweaty and beady-eyed Steve Ballmer. (just kidding). W7 will move your files into a folder under C:/ titled "old.windows," so essentially it will do the backup for you, but should something go wrong, having a backup of what little you have on your Mini is recommended. IF you are using the 16 GB version you need to have around 9GB of free space on the hard drive. Just go to the Add/Remove Programs in the control panel and get rid of anything that took up a lot of space (ie Microsoft Office, Photoshop, etc). Also use disk cleanup to get over the threshold of free space - right-click on local disk (C:) > properties > disk cleanup, check all boxes and run it. (special thanks to Visvam for the details here) Step 2: Download Windows 7 beta 32-bit version (direct download) Step 3 Option A: Burn to DVD, restart and install If you have an external DVD drive burn the ISO and restart your computer to install from the disk Step 3 Option B: Extract the install files to an external HD or USB stick The downloaded file should be in an .iso format, so use an ISO Extractorto copy the files onto either an external USB stick or hard drive. Step 3 Option C: Extract and mount files to a USB stick. In order for your USB stick to be recognized as a bootable drive, install the HP USB disk formatter(link). From there, extract the contents of your ISO to this, and go into your BIOS and make sure USB-boot is enabled. [b]Step 4: Install! It's pretty straightforward, remember if you have XP on the Mini you have to do a clean install. The process takes a few hours, courtesy of your 40MB/sec SSD. Step 5: Update Drivers Windows 7 should be pretty compatible with Vista applications and drivers. To address the sound issues, try installing this driver which reportedly is compat. Other Thoughts If you have a Mini with a 60GB hard drive, you can opt for partitioning your hard drive and installing Windows 7 on the other partition. That way you save Windows XP! If you can't see your XP partition, try this trick, courtesy of Ellipsoid: In 7 go to start > all programs > administrative tools > computer management Select Storage > Disk Management Right click your XP partition and select Change drive letter. Assign a letter. Done.
----------------------Part 3: What is compatible or not---------------------Audio: Yes (if you have problems install the audio drivers herer) Video: Intel 945 board (950GMA) drivers optional. Touchpad: Synaptics for Vista here. Mic: No (not sure) Webcam: Recognized, works with Skype Beta (according to Abend).
