Greetings in Jesus! Well, better late than not at all. Usually the only time the magazine has ever been late is due to illness--my own, of course, since this magazine is all on my shoulders. This time, the weight on those shoulders was a bit too much. I can’t blame it all on the holidays either, even though that was a big factor. There are other factors as well: the kids are home from school for the holidays, my husband has a new job that is a graveyard shift (that threw everything out of whack!), issues with the book publishing company that needed to be dealt with a.s.a.p. (still dealing), and me, only 40, and going through peri-menopause on top of the other stuff. Yes, that list is a very tall order for anyone to deal with. And if you think that is a lot, wait till you read what has been happening on the home front! Enjoy this month issue, sorry it is late. Happy Reading! On the Home Front... December was a busy month for us all. I had finals in my three college classes (got all A’s, by the way), my husband started a new job, Nick came home for a short visit before Christmas then headed to Klawock to spend Christmas with his new girlfriend and her family, and, of course, the younger kids are running amuck around the house driving me crazy--when does school start again? Our eldest son, Josh, has flown the coop--again. He moved back to Haines on January 3rd (yesterday) and plans to attend school in Anchorage to work toward his goal of becoming a Christian Psychologist. He is also planning on doing more book signings for his book “A Half-Husband’s Journey” that came out in August in Haines, Anchorage, and other cities in the upper part of our great state. We wish him the best in reaching his future goals. So, yesterday was Josh’s big move day, and yesterday morning our 14-year-old daughter, Cristina, ran off. She was throwing her teenager attitude at her dad while we were in the car, he kept telling her to stop, she didn’t (sound familiar?) so he said, “OK. You just lost all your communications again. No phone, no computer.” Oh my gosh, it was the end of her world! When we stopped at a local store, she bolted. We have not seen her since. Cristina had just gotten her communications back the week prior. She has made some bad choices in the past couple of months and she got caught up with the wrong crowd, tried drugs, and ended up in the ER for eight hours. It was a horrible experience for us all. She has been on restriction since and slowly gaining back some of her freedoms little by little. So, in the midst of helping Josh finish packing, getting his stuff to the barge and him to the ferry, we are reporting our daughter as a runaway, searching the mall, the rec center, anywhere she could go, calling her friends, family, praying constantly, etc. in hopes to find her. No such luck, just yet. So the busy month of December has spilled over into January causing us even more stress than the holidays brought us. Nick is back home in Juneau, Josh moved away, and Cristina ran away, plus, Zack and Christerpher are so wrapped up their new video games, they seem oblivious to it all. Oblivion must be nice, especially compared to what has been smacking me in the face lately. Thankfully, I know that whatever God brings you to, He helps you through. I just wish He wouldn’t bring me to so much all at once. Cristina Josh Get Fit4Jesus Today--Angela © 2008 The Fit Christian. A Publication of His Work Christian Publishing. Box 5732 Ketchikan, Alaska 99901 www.fitchristian.com © Jerry Ousley Perhaps you’ve been good at keeping New Year’s resolutions, but I never have been. You begin with sincerity and really want to make improvements in your life. But it is so hard to develop new habits isn’t it? It takes discipline, and I have to say that I admire someone who has the will power to get the job done and see it all the way through. It isn’t easy. My big resolution is to get more exercise and I usually start out keeping a tight schedule. But as days progress my schedule gets looser and looser until, alas, I’ve broken my resolution. Last year I almost made it three days. There is one resolution I’d like to discuss briefly, however, and it is the one that involves improving our spiritual lives. We determine that we are going to start attending Church, or give up this or that to make us closer to God. Others may say that they are going to start treating people better, and the list goes on. Improving our attitude or moral stance is, of course, a good thing. We all need to treat others better, or consider someone above ourselves. That is Scripture. But we will never succeed in getting closer to God just by doing these things. You see, the morals we display or the way we treat others isn’t how we get closer to God, but the results of getting closer to God. The way we get close to Him is by spending more time with Him. Most of us do that with our spouse before we get married. We go out to eat together, and sit and talk with one other. That’s how we find out more about the person we love, and get close to the one we want as our mate. Many marriages that end in divorce come as a shock to people because the marriage seemed to be full of good works and the two may have been very moral individuals. However, something failed in their communication and they just weren’t friends any more. They had grown incompatible. What a tragedy. Again, this is just like our relationship with God. Without time in prayer and reading His Word how can we ever get to know Him? Our interests will eventually turn to other things and away “We can find that closer relationship with God this New Year, but it will take some work on our part.” The world would try to tell us that we need to see if we are compatible first suggesting that we move in with that person as sort of a trial run. But to really get to know the one we are going to spend the rest of our lives with we’ve got to spend time talking and communicating - Just moving in together borderlines “playing house.” The physical side of love comes later after marriage. Really, why commit physically if we aren’t willing to commit to the whole shebang? from Him. Before we know it we are committing Spiritual Adultery. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 tells us to “pray without ceasing” and John 5:39 says to search the Scriptures. We can find that closer relationship with God this New Year, but it will take some work on our part. It will take dedication to Him and a commitment to Christ. If you’ve never given your life to Him do it today. Simply ask Him, believe Him, and then spend time with Him. If you seek, you will find (Matthew 7:7). Now, It’s the same with getting close to God. We can go to Church that’s one New Year’s resolution worth keeping! (which is a good thing), we can treat others with great respect and consideration (that’s a good thing too), we can be full of morals and honest as the day is long (and that’s good also), but we can’t substitute these things as ways of getting to know God. All Rights Reserved. www.fitchristian.com 7 (Family Features) Whether it’s fitting in time for exercise, packing tasty and nutritious snacks, or cooking a balanced meal at home, Americans are committing to healthy lifestyles in 2008. A recent survey conducted by Kelton Research found that as the new year approaches, health is on many Americans’ minds – more than 50 percent of those surveyed are resolving to exercise or eat healthfully in the new year. “There’s no better time than the start of a new year to commit to an exercise plan...” Kim Lyons, fitness trainer and star of NBC’s “The Biggest Loser,” applauds Americans’ desires to commit to fitness and smart, nutritious diets. “There’s no better time than the start of a new year to commit to an exercise plan or introduce healthier foods into your diet. Just a few small adjustments can help you stay on the road to a new self in 2008 and beyond,” she says. Lyons offers the following tips and tricks to help Americans keep their healthy New Year’s resolutions. Get moving: Feeling tired is not an excuse to sit on the sofa. Exercising actually gives you more energy because the body releases endorphins, “feel good” hormones, which result in a natural high. Try going for a 20 minute walk next time you are feeling sluggish. Jennie-O Turkey Store has joined forces with Kim Lyons, fitness trainer and star of NBC’s “The Biggest Loser,” to help consumers keep their New Year’s resolutions by offering tips and tricks to stay motivated and on track in the coming year. Download the free guide at www.jennieo.com. Photo courtesy of Jennie-O Turkey Store Simple substitutions: Cut calories wherever you can. For example, swap whole or two percent milk for skim. Instead of ground beef, try JENNIE-O TURKEY STORE Extra Lean Ground Turkey, which has less fat and fewer calories. A family affair: Make healthy eating fun for the whole family by getting the kids involved in mealtime preparation. Let the kids pick the menu from a few good-for-you meal options. When dinnertime rolls around they will be proud of their choice and will be excited to eat nutritious dishes. Protein power: Your body uses more calories digesting protein than it does breaking down carbohydrates and fat. Photo courtesy of Jennie-O Turkey Store © 2008 The Fit Christian. To optimize your metabolism and keep you feeling full longer, include protein choices like lean turkey, almonds or dry beans in meals and snacks. Stay positive: Replace negative self-talk with inspirational mantras. For example, replacing “I can’t do this” with “I’m getting better at this every day” will keep your mind motivated. To remain on track, be realistic about your goals. It’s more likely that you will commit to a healthy lifestyle by making changes gradually, rather than all at once. Try one new recipe each week, incorporating vegetables, lean meats and whole grains. Add exercise to your routine in a frequency that works for your life. If you can only start with one or two days a week, do what you can and work to increase your frequency gradually. Slowly but surely, these diet and lifestyle changes will add up and you will be on your way to a new you.
