Fifteen-year-old Molly Jespersen, of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, passed her senior freestyle figure skating test at thirteen. She and her coach, Tish Driscoll, set this goal for herself, but not for the usual reasons. Jespersen's father, Jake, has Myotonic Muscular Dystrophy, a genetic disease, and Jespersen has a 50/50 chance of having it. Yet, this remarkable young woman pursues one skating goal after another, always with the thought that tomorrow the disease could come. Jespersen also spends her days supporting the Muscular Dystrophy Association and skates for the cause in a yearly national ice show

3 Survivor: Paige Hollingsworth
The moment our eyes met across the room I knew I had to meet her. We were the only two in the congregation wearing hats and it was as if we instinctively knew that neither of us wore them for fashion. I wore mine to shade my eyes from bright lights that could instantly bring on a migraine associated with my nerve condition, trigeminal neuralgia. Her reason was more obvious and more serious. Anyone who has ever had a loved one-experience chemotherapy would recognize it in an instant. The minute the service was over I made my way to her, longing to know her story. Thus began my friendship with one of the most remarkable women I have ever met – Paige Hollingsworth, ovarian cancer survivor...
4 Healthy and Simple Meals
When it comes to recipes, the words healthy and simple don’t always seem to go together. But preparing a nutritious meal doesn’t have to be hard. The first step is to pick a lean protein. Dieticians and nutritionists recommend getting lean protein from natural, lean sources such as skinless poultry, fish, beef or pork loins and beans. Protein is essential to keep the body fueled...
7 Bake It Organic
If you thought that organic baking means dry granola bars, think again. Organic baking has come a long way from the granola days. It’s come full circle, really. Long before supermarkets and commercial farming, folks made baked goods with what they grew and made themselves...

From the Editor...
Greetings in Jesus! Well I can honestly say that the past few months have not been dull. It took me longer than expected to recover from surgery, so I had to forego the Sept/Oct issue. I am sorry about that. But all is well now–thank you all for your prayers and kind emails, cards, letters, and love. This is the last issue of 2008. With it brings a new column from Dennis Ellingson, retired pastor and author of The Godly Grandparent and God’s Healing Herbs. The column will be full of information about the healing and healthful properties of the plants and herbs that God has given us. Enjoy Dennis’ new column “God’s Healing Herbs”. Happy Reading!
I know you are probably wondering how my surgery went in August. It went very well, and not only did I get to enjoy a few days in Seattle with one of my best friends, John, I got to take in some new sights, eat some Arby’s, and do a little shopping. I even got to go to Krispy Kreme for my birthday–I am still a Dunkin Donuts fan, though.

Upon returning to Ketchikan after surgery, I spent the weekend at my ‘other’ mother’s home, and mainly slept. Mom had to go back to work on Monday so I stayed at my best friend Seattle Space Needle at night. Carrie’s home to continue my recovery. The following weekend Zack and Cristina came back home after spending time with Nick in Juneau–he took care of them while I was south. Christerpher Jr. was still out with his dad on the fishing boat at this point, so I was still able to get some rest while the two teenagers took care of me and squabbled amongst themselves. Yes, I was indeed home.

Later in September, Christerpher finally came home from his long fishing trip, so I finally had all my younger kids at home. They are such a blessing to me! We got back into the groove of things, then I fell ill one day with the stomach flu. Later that night my girlfriend came over to take me to the ER, while she was there I kept passing out. Then I stopped breathing, my heart stopped beating, and she performed CPR. (You can read more about that in my column “Scripture & Reflection”). I spent the rest of that week in the hospital Me after thyroid surgery. Me and my good friend, John, while the doctor’s performed all kinds of tests on me–nothing to be cooling off from the Seattle heat. found. They could find no reason for the stomach pain, the fainting (something I never do), or the dying. My doctor and I eventually came to the conclusion that my body was still weak from surgery and just could not handle the stomach flu. Only God knows what really happened and why. It took me a lot longer to recover from this incident then it was from the surgery. I was down for quite a while, but eventually I fully recovered. During all of these medical issues my husband and I were separated, and he was out of town fishing. So, I really did not have much help with things. Yes, I had good friends and great kids by my side some of the time, along with a God that loves me very much. But through it all I learned that I don’t need anyone but God. He is enough. At the end of the day, when there is no one around, you find that the only thing that really matters is your relationship with Christ. My husband and I are still separated, but we are working on things with God’s help. We are going through the book The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman. It is very insightful–I would recommend it to anybody.
John and I at Krispy Kreme on my 41st birthday–three days after surgery. God is leading me to move down south and change the publishing business to a non-profit
organization. This is new territory for me, and I continue to pray for guidance for it all. I would appreciate your prayers as well. May God bless you and your families this holiday season.

Twice in five years, this twenty-year-old qualified for the State Games of America in Colorado Springs, a huge accomplishment. Moreover, coach Driscoll believes in Jespersen's dedication. Doctors told her she would never skate again, but the Princeton, New Jersey native proves them wrong each day. White, a novice level skater, competes, attends the University of Richmond as a pre-med major and works on forming a collegiate skating team. This inspiring young woman also serves as youth chair of her local arthritis foundation where she educates others about the disease. "This song explains exactly how I feel. No matter how many times epilepsy has tried to kick me off the ice, I have kicked back one more time, always ready to stand and fight back," Johnson said. "I don't let epilepsy run my life. I live with epilepsy. Epilepsy is a part of Heather Johnson. I am Heather Johnson who has a disability that affects my life, but I can still live my life the best I can." TERI Teri Harte also loves skating, since the age of three. While just a high school sophomore, this energetic young woman planned and directed numerous charity ice shows including a "skate-a thon" and "Holiday on Ice," a production benefiting a local scholarship foundation for a favorite high school teacher who died unexpectedly.
