Conv�m recordar que o primeiro povoamento branco do Rio Grande do Sul foi espanhol; seu poder e influencia estenderam-se at� depois da conquista das Miss�es; prov�m disso que as velhas lendas riograndenses acham-se tramadas no acervo platino de antanho. Vem da Ib�ria, a topar-se com a ing�nua e confusa tradi��o guaran�tica (v. g. a lenda da M�boi-t�t�) a mescla crist�-�rabe de abus�es e misticismo; dos encantamentos e dos milagres; desses elementos, confundidos e abrumados ( p. ex. a salamanca do serro do Jarau ), nasceram idealiza��es novas e t�picas adaptadas ou decorrentes do meio f�sico e das gentes ainda na crassa inf�ncia das concep��es. E, como entre conquistadores brancos corria intensa e r�bida a febre da riqueza � o sonho escaldante do El-Dorado � a fulgir nas areias e nos cascalhos, espadanando das entranhas misteriosas e apojadas do Novo-Mundo, a preponderante vivaz das suas fic��es � sempre a imantada �nsia � pelo ouro!, forte sobre a dor e a pr�pria morte... A M�BOI-T�T�
I Foi assim: num campo muito antigo, muito, houve uma noite t�o comprida que pareceu que nunca mais haveria luz do dia. Noite escura como breu, sem lume no c�u, sem vento, sem serenada e sem rumores, sem cheiro dos pastos maduros nem das flores da mataria. Os homens viveram abichornados, na tristeza dura; e porque churrasco n�o havia, n�o mais sopravam labaredas nos fog�es e passavam comendo canjica insossa; os borralhos estavam se apagando e era preciso poupar os ti��es...
Os olhos andavam t�o enfarados da noite, que, ficavam parados, horas e horas, olhando sem ver as brasas vermelhas do nhanduv�i... as brasas somente, porque as faiscas, que alegram, n�o saltavam, por falta do sopro forte de bocas contentes. Naquela escurid�o fechada nenhum tapejara seria capaz de cruzar pelos trilhos do campo, nenhum flete crioulo teria faro nem ouvido nem vista para bater quer�ncia; at� nem sorro daria no seu pr�prio rastro! E a noite velha ia andando... ia andando...
II Minto: no meio do escuro e do sil�ncio morto, de vez em quando, ora duma banda ora doutra, de vez em quando uma cantiga forte, de bicho vivente, furava o ar; era o _t�u-t�u_ ativo, que n�o dormia desde o entrar do �ltimo sol e que vigiava sempre, esperando a volta do sol novo, que devia vir e que tardava tanto j�... S� o _t�u-t�u_ de vez em quando cantava; o seu � _quero quero!_ � t�o claro, vindo de l� do fundo da escurid�o, ia ag�entando a esperan�a dos homens, amontoados no redor avermelhado das brasas. Fora disto, tudo o mais era sil�ncio; e de movimento, ent�o, nem nada.
III Minto: na ultima lado para a estrela tremenda; a cair, e tarde em que houve sol, quando o sol ia descambando para o o outro lado das coxilhas, rumo do minuano, e de onde sobe d�alva, nessa ultima tarde tamb�m desabou uma chuvarada foi uma manga d��gua que levou um temp�o durou... e durou...
Os campos foram inundados; as lagoas subiram e se largaram em fitas coleando os tacuruzais e banhados, que se juntaram, todos, num; os passos cresceram e todo aquele peso d��gua correu para as sangas e das sangas para os arroios, que ficaram bufando, campo fora, campo fora, afogando as canhadas, batendo no lombo das coxilhas. E nessas coroas � que ficou sendo o paradouro da animalada, tudo misturado, no assombro. E era terneiros e pumas, tourada e potrilhos, perdizes e guaraxains, tudo amigo, de puro medo. E ent�o!... Nas copas dos buti�s vinham encostar-se bolos de formigas, as cobras se enroscavam na enredi�a dos aguap�s; e nas estivas do santa-f� e das tiriricas boiavam os rat�es e outros mi�dos.
E, como a �gua encheu todas as tocas, entrou tamb�m na da cobra grande, a � _boi-guass�_ � que, havia j� muitas m�os de luas, dormia quieta, entanguida. Ela ent�o acordou-se e saiu, rabiando. Come�ou depois a mortandade dos bichos e a _boi-guass�_ pegou a comer as carni�as. Mas s� comia os olhos e nada, nada mais. A �gua foi baixando, a carni�a foi cada vez engrossando, e a cada hora mais olhos a cobra grande comia.
IV Cada bicho guarda no corpo o sumo do que comeu. A tambeira que s� come trevo maduro, d� no leite o cheiro doce do milho verde; o cerdo que come carne de bagual nem vinte alqueires de mandioca o limpam bem; e o soc� tristonho e o bigu� matreiro at� no sangue tem cheiro de pescado. Assim tamb�m, nos homens, que at� sem comer nada, dam nos olhos a cor dos seus arrancos. O homem de olhos limpos � guapo e m�o aberta; cuidado com os vermelhos; mais cuidado com os amarelos; e toma ten�ncia doble com os raiados e ba�os!... Assim foi tamb�m, mais de outro jeito, com a _boi-guass�_, que tantos olhos comeu.
V Todos � tantos, tantos! que a cobra grande comeu �, guardavam entranhando e luzindo, um rastilho da ultima luz que eles viram do �ltimo sol, antes da noite grande que caiu... E os olhos � tantos, tantos! � com um pingo de luz cada um, foram sendo devorados; no principio um punhado, ao depois uma por��o, depois um bocad�o, depois, como uma bra�ada...
VI E vai, como a _boi-guass�_ n�o tinha p�los como o boi, nem escamas como o dourado, nem penas como o avestruz, nem casca como o tatu, nem couro grosso como a anta vai, o seu corpo foi ficando transparente clareado pelos miles de luzezinhas, dos tantos olhos que foram esmagados dentro dele, deixando cada qual sua pequena r�stia de luz. E vai, afinal, a boi-guass� toda j� era uma luzerna, um clar�o sem chamas, j� era um fogar�u azulado, de luz amarela e triste e fria, sa�da dos olhos, que fora guardada neles, quando ainda estavam vivos...

Foi assim e foi por isso que os homens, quando pela primeira vez viram a _boi-guass�_ t�o demudada, n�o a conheceram mais. N�o conheceram e julgando que era outra, muito outra, chamaram-na desde ent�o, de _boi-t�t�_, cobra de fogo, _boi-t�t�_ , a _boi-t�t�_ ! E muitas vezes a _boi-t�t�_ rondou as rancherias, faminta, sempre que nem chimarr�o. Era ent�o que o t�u-t�u cantava, como bombeiro. E os homens, por curiosos, olhavam pasmados, para aquele grande corpo de serpente, transparente � _t�t�_, de fogo � que media mais bra�as que tr�s la�os de conta e iam alumiando ba�amente as carquejas... E depois, choravam...."
