Producer The Alchemist (Cypress Hill, Nas, Snoop Dogg) handles many cuts, emphasizing the thunderous beats and dark synth washes lurking around the edges of each half-buried melody. “You Don’t Know,” the first single, unites Eminem, 50 Cent, newcomer Ca$his and Lloyd Banks from the Shady and G-Unit factions, its portentous chorus building steam with each go-round. Fans will be especially floored by album-ender “No Apologies,” an oddly spare but sturdy track that acts as Eminem’s response to the recent press he’s enjoyed/endured. With 22 tracks (all but a few of them proper songs), “The Re-Up” is indeed a coherent album, one that feels far more essential than its origins would imply. But where he was once known for out- H T REVIEW landish street rhymes (few rappers combine grim and silly so successfully), he no longer sounds quite like his old, devil-may-care self. His new album, “Crook by da Book” (Hypnotize Minds/Sony Urban/Columbia), was produced by Juicy J (who is Project Pat’s brother) and DJ Paul, the two core members of Three 6 Mafia; they have toned down their woozy, psychedelic beats to match Project Pat’s sober mood. Sometimes the old manic energy is missed. (Though some remains; especially in “Good Googly Moogly,” a daffy lesson in posteriorology.) But “Purple,” which first seems like an ode to recreational pharmacology, somehow morphs into a cautionary tale. And “How It Goes in the Gutta” is full of riveting, clear-eyed storytelling; if Project Pat seems obsessed with crime and punishment, it’s not hard to figure out why. File photo by Chang W. Kicking off with an angry shoutout/dismissal, “Eminem Presents the Re-Up” wastes no time showcasing Em’s dexterous flows and talent for choosing MCs that play to his lyrical strengths. “We’re Back” and a remix of “Pistol Pistol” spin their wheels, but the brooding “Murder” nails it with its considerable emotional gravitas. It’s arguably a reckless move, given the recent shooting death of D12 member Proof, but the blasting horn samples M ach and Daddy chronicle the hardship of being decieved by a girl in “La Botella,” the duo’s most popular song. The club tune talks about being cheated on by a loved one — a woman — and drinking can MACH AND how good remedy. be a DADDY It’s a party 9 P.M.SATURDAY jam, and one that has done very CASABLANCA well at the clubs. Perhaps that’s why the duo, originally from Panamá, has found mass appeal across the United States. “La Botella” hit the charts big, and occupied the No. 1 spot on Radio & Record’s “Record Pool Chart.” (Radio & Records is the same company that keeps track of radio station ratings.) The two singers/rappers were also named “Duo Revelación 2005,” or new artists of the year. Pedro Machore, known as “Mach” and Martin Machore (or Courtesy photo “Daddy”) drew their musical influence from their father, a known singer, composer and member of “Calipso Panamá,” a musical group. And Panamá is exactly where reggaetón, as it is known today, was born. Panamá is the home of El General, who is often called the godfather of reggaetón. In 2005, Mach and Daddy recorded “La Botella,” a song that would become a hit in Panamá and reach the nation’s No. 1 spot on the radio charts within two weeks. The song also became No. 1 all over Central America, in countries such as Nicaragua, Costa Rica and El Salvador. The duo has performed the hit continously and played many soldout concerts, some reaching an audience of 20,000. The group’s album, “Desde Abajo,” was released under Universal Music Latino in the United States and rapidly received tons of airtime and club plays. Besides “La Botella,” Mach and Daddy also have hits such as “Ese Soy Yo,” “Mejor Que Tu,” “Me Voy De Fiesta” and “Acuerdate.” Tickets for Saturday’s 9 p.m. show at the Casablanca Convention Center, located off Highway 59, are $25 and available at San Ramon Record Shop, among other locations. ..."
